With reference to the telegraphic correspond-

ence noted in the margin, I have the

honour to inform you that on the night of the 15th. instant I proceeded to Canton by

river steamer accompanied by the Secretary for Chinese Affairs,

Mr. Ponsonby-Fane, Private Secretary, and Lieutenant Kinchin Smith

of the 4th. King's Om Shropshire Light Infantry who was in mufti, and called the following day upon Luk Wing Ting, Military Governor of Kuangtung and Chu Ching Lan, Civil Governor of

Kuangtung - I took the opportunity also of onlling on Chan Ping

Kwan, Military Governor of Kuangsi who had called on me a few

days before during a brief visit to Hongkong and who is at

present staying at Canton.

I was received both on landing and at the Yomen of the Military Governor of Kuangtung by a large guard of honour and I and my suite together with His Britannic Majesty's

Consul General were entertained at luncheon at the Yamen of the

Civil Governor by the Military and Civil Governors jointly. The Military Governor of Kuangsi and all the principal Chinese officials resident at Canton were among the guests.
